Sustainability informs La Trobe’s academic mission. THE lists La Trobe among its top 20 universities for contributions to advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and fourth in the world for its research on infectious diseases and its support for healthcare professions, including the overall health of La Trobe’s students and staff. Its other areas of strength include biological sciences, food sciences, and initiatives to promote social change and equity.

Many of its courses are accredited by industry peak bodies, further ensuring that every La Trobe student receives a thorough, relevant education.
La Trobe’s main campus in Bundoora is the largest metropolitan university campus in Australia. It lies just 14 km from Melbourne, Australia’s top student city and the third-best in the world according to the QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2019. Its location offers the benefits of easy access to a major city along with a relaxed atmosphere that incorporates a large wildlife sanctuary and extensive grounds across more than 660 acres. Plans are underway to convert the Bundoora campus into a full-fledged university city, enhancing student life with an AU$5 billion investment in the campus’s infrastructure and integration with one of Australia’s burgeoning urban regions. Its other major campuses are the recently upgraded Bendigo campus and one in Albury-Wodonga, on the border with New South Wales. Regional campuses include locations in Sydney, Melbourne proper, Mildura, and Shepparton, the latter of which is scheduled for an AU$10.5 revitalisation.
The QS World University Rankings place La Trobe among the top 50 universities worldwide for international students. Support for overseas students includes an extensive array of scholarships devoted specifically to students from other countries; scholarships are also available to postgraduate students based on their intended fields of research. Scholarships at La Trobe can be stacked: students who qualify for multiple scholarships receive the full value of each. International students are eligible for two-year work visas following their studies at La Trobe.
