As well as a youth and education charity, City Year UK is a movement for social change which aims to inspire young people to take part in civic service and, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, to be the change they wish to see in the world. We currently work in London, Birmingham and Manchester and are a beacon for a volunteer service year. Through empowering young people to be the change they wish to see in their communities, we raise the attainment and ambition of children from disadvantaged backgrounds while supporting our volunteers - known as 'corps members' - to develop skills and networks to realise their ambitions after City Year.
Originally founded in Boston in 1988 by Harvard Law School roommates Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, City Year now operates in 26 US cities with nearly 3,000 young people dedicating 11 months of service each year. City Year was able to come to the UK in 2010 and our ambition for the next ten years is to grow to support 70,000 children with 1000 corps members in 100 schools across 5 UK cities.
Since 2010, 500 young people have completed a City Year in London and Birmingham, giving more than 570,000 hours and reaching over 20,000 children growing up in deprived areas. More than ninety percent of City Year UK's alumni make a smooth transition into further education, employment or training after their City Year.
What will you do?
During Monday to Thursday, teams of corps members are a consistent presence in schools, supporting children to succeed through a range of activities. As part of our year-round partnership with schools, they:
•Welcome children at the school gates in the morning to encourage punctuality and attendance;
•Provide in-class support alongside teachers and teaching assistants to boost attainment;
•Support groups of ‘focus list’ children with literacy, numeracy or building confidence;
•Are there at break-times, reducing disruptive behaviour;
•Lead breakfast and after-school clubs.
Through volunteering, corps members gain transferable skills such as project management and public speaking, but also benefit from City Year’s training and careers programme. Run every Friday, in conjunction with our corporate partners, it includes career exploration sessions, CV and interview guidance, presentation training, networking opportunities and work shadowing.
City Year is also about developing yourself as a leader and preparing you for long term work or study after City Year. Our Fridays are all about professional and personal development. We focus on supporting you to develop transferable skills that will ensure you can succeed after City Year. Through workshops, corporate engagement and networking opportunities over 300 hours are spent on training and careers. This will include direct involvement with a host of our corporate supporters such as Burberry Foundation, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, National Grid, TowerBrook Capital Partners LLP and Virgin Trains.
What makes a graduate stand out?
All disciplines studied are welcome. We recruit high quality graduates but we are looking for much more than academic achievement in the young people we recruit for our programme. Your passion and dedication to transforming children’s lives is what matters most. You need to be exceptional in your commitment to helping children and making a positive contribution to society. Some of the attributes we look for in an ideal candidate are: passion; ambition; resilience; teamwork; self-awareness; and leadership.
Our corps members volunteer during term time only. Throughout this period you will receive:
•Training and in-depth experience working with children
•Unrivalled opportunities to receive training, CV advice, interview practice and career advice involving a host of our corporate supporters such as BurberryFoundation, Credit Suisse, National Grid, Virgin Trains and many others.
•An opportunity to have a mentor for 12 months from one of our many supporters and funders.
•Free uniform
•£100 per week subsistence in London
•Additional allowance to cover your travel throughout the year
•Membership to our alumni programme upon completing the year
Closing date for application 31st July 2015.
