What type of things will I be working on?
On this 2-year graduate scheme, starting September 2024, you will be involved in all stages of product developing, while alongside subject-matter experts and being responsible for work packages contributing to ongoing projects, including:
- Working with mechanical engineers to design and produce systems which include laser optics
- Performing optical systems engineering
- Using Ray-tracing software
- Writing simple software scripts to control prototype systems
- Optical breadboarding and experimentation
Gaining exposure to:
- Optical system design and development
- System and optical component specification, sourcing, and testing
- Planning and conducting experiments as part of the product design process.
- Additive manufacturing systems and processes
You will gain knowledge and experience within a highly talented team of like-minded scientists and engineers working within one of our product divisions. You will take part in a wide range of general and role-specific training opportunities and will be supported by a mentor to help you gain knowledge and ensure your career gets off to a flying start.
What career opportunities are available?
By the end of the scheme, you will have developed expertise in how optical engineering is applied at Renishaw as well as an idea of your own strengths and interests. You will have developed specialist technical knowledge, skills and background theory in areas such as optics and photonics, and systems engineering allowing you to develop into a senior engineer role.

Where will I be working?
This role is based out of one of our main sites in New Mills, near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire. As Renishaw sites are based in semi-rural locations, applicants must have their own form of transport or be willing to relocate to the local area.
What do I need and how do I apply?
We’re looking for passionate engineers expecting a 2:1 or above (or equivalent) in a technical field such as Design, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics
Training and development is excellent so candidates with no experience but a keen interest in engineering will be strongly considered. If you are excited about the role but feel as though you don’t meet all the requirements, we would encourage you still to apply.
