Opportunity details...
Naval Architecture is a whole boat engineering discipline and operates as one of the design authorities within the shipbuilding industry. Naval Architects are not only involved in the design of vessels but are involved in all aspects of manufacture right through to launch, test and commission. Within Submarines the Naval Architects are responsible for all hydrostatics and hydrodynamics and are also the Docking Authority responsible for any movement of the submarine units.
How you will fit in...
Naval Architects work closely with a number of other departments including Propulsion, Internal Arrangement and Diving & Manoeuvring. We work to ensure the submarine does what the specification states it should do; from going at the right speed and diving to the right depth to being agile enough to out‐manoeuvre a potential foe whilst remaining as quiet as possible.
A large part of the work conducted by a Naval Architect is computer based design however they are also heavily involved in computer simulation modelling and as well as physical model tank testing. The design process of producing a submarine involves both computer and physical model testing which then influences the computer design work produced within the Department.
Main responcibilities...
The Docking Naval Architect is responsible for any block move of the submarine and is also responsible for launching the submarine on the shiplift. All predicted loading calculations are produced by the Docking Naval Architect and are strictly followed by the Transport and Logistics Department.
The Department also conduct a Trim & Incline Experiment when the submarine is near completion. The primary purpose of this experiment is to establish the vessels centre of gravity and to ensure the submarine trim is within the limits of the specification.
Profile of a Naval Architect...
Naval Architects are professional engineers and strive to become part of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects or RINA. RINA is a global Institution known in all corners of the globe for having a competent and skilled membership. Being a member of RINA opens doors globally that would not otherwise be available for an engineer’s professional development.
