Local Government Association Graduate Scheme

Fast-track your career while making a difference. Join the NGDP Finance Graduate scheme!

The NGDP Finance Graduate Scheme, a specialised stream within the NGDP, offers a four-year programme dedicated to developing future local government and public sector finance leaders.

As a trainee, you will gain hands-on experience in critical financial areas like budgeting, auditing, and accounting while pursuing the prestigious CIPFA Level 7 Apprenticeship (fully funded). This includes the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy's Professional Accountancy Qualification (CIPFA PAQ), a cornerstone for a career in public finance management.

Your journey in the NGDP Finance Stream is not just about learning; it's about applying your skills to real-world challenges.

Working across diverse finance departments, you'll develop a comprehensive understanding of public finance operations. The programme is structured to offer a blend of practical work experience and academic learning, ensuring well-rounded professional development.

You'll be more than a trainee; you're a vital contributor to tackling pressing issues facing our communities. By the end of this program, you'll be well-equipped to step into leadership roles within local government or the broader public sector, empowered by a robust network of professionals and a deep understanding of public finance.

“The most meaningful thing for me about working in local government is that you’re all united by how much you care about the place, and people genuinely want to make a positive difference. You’re not driven by profit, you’re driven by a desire to make things better.”

Katy, based in Yorkshire.

Salary

Starting salaries vary between £27,500 and £35,200 depending on the participating organisation with which you are placed (plus inner/outer London weighting if applicable).

All benefits packages include generous holiday entitlement, flexible working arrangements, and an excellent pension scheme.

“One of the best things about working in local government is knowing that whatever you do, you’ll have an impact in your local community, whether that is helping a resident solve a problem or developing a policy idea that can make a lasting difference."

Laura, based in London.
