Public Health England (PHE) is an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care providing; strategic leadership, research, advice and support for Government, local authorities and the NHS in protecting and improving the nation's health.
The Personal Dosimetry Service (PDS) is a commercial service that serves over 7,000 employers working with ionising radiations in the industrial, research and medical sectors, by assessing the radiation doses to their employees. This is carried out by means of passive personal dosemeters, which are issued used by the employee then returned to PDS for processing and reporting. The service helps build experience which informs PHE's advice to government and users of radiation, and makes a significant contribution towards the agency's income.
The role of Technical Developments Officer will be to assist the PDS Manager in planning and driving technical developments whilst also contributing substantially to the routine work of the team. This will involve working closely with a wide range of people (PDS colleagues, external suppliers and PHE internal support) to ensure good progress and high quality customer service. The postholder will use their technical background to understand and interpret proposals, and to ensure specifications are adequate and meaningful. The developments will include improvements to software by external support providers, laboratory equipment and processes, dosimetry, customer interactions and our Quality System.
The postholder will ideally have a physics background with experience of delivering technical work. They must possess the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. An understanding of personal dosimetry systems, HSE approval and Quality systems would be advantageous, as would experience of working in a commercial environment. Newly qualified graduates with the correct attributes, who are keen to learn, are encouraged to apply. Training will be given.
The postholder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills to liaise with a wide range of people including colleagues, customers and technical experts. The postholder will have good decision making skills plus the ability to manage projects and meet deadlines. Experience of working in a team is essential, as is an ability to form good working relationships.
