The challenge
Joining the Knowledge, Analysis and Intelligence Directorate (KAI) in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), you'll provide high-quality statistical research, analysis and advice to inform policy and operations at the highest levels of government.
KAI offers specialist skills in analysis and research, data and strategic business intelligence. Its role is to identify, develop, provide and share analytical products to help HMRC and HM Treasury (HMT) deliver better, evidence-based policy and improvements to service.
Work is highly varied but will typically involve secondary analysis of large datasets and primary data collection through surveys and qualitative research. Previous projects have included delivery of tax analysis for Budget 2012, assessment of changes to environment and transport taxes, and research into customer satisfaction for HMRC.
The person
Your analytical skills could have been honed through study for a degree with a high statistical content such as statistics, mathematics, economics or business studies. Alternatively, you'll hold a graduate diploma of the Royal Statistical Society (or equivalent).
In addition, you'll have good customer focus and well-rounded communication skills. Experience in SAS, Excel and other MS Office packages would be useful, as would experience of analysing and manipulating large datasets, but training can be provided.
You will be matched to an appropriate level of post, according to your skills and experience. Higher and senior officers will have significant experience in statistics related employment. As a senior officer you will also be expected to lead projects and areas of work; as well as working as part of a team to deliver the above..
