Still, as a student or recent graduate, you need to stay determined and focus on your technique when searching for jobs. Recently, a study by a recruitment agency has stated that although the graduate job market is improving, it is challenging indeed. The most sought after positions are in banking and finance, top retailers and manufacturers of consumer goods, which are receiving at least 80 applications per place. On average, there are still 52 graduates for every place. So, are your chances of securing a graduate job the same as choosing your favorite card in the deck? Well, in terms of luck you may think yes, but there are certain ways in which you can make sure your application is at the top of the pile. One of the most important things is discovering what marks you out as a candidate. Sometimes this is referred to as your 'unique selling point', since effectively you are a product, which a company wants to have. For example, you may be fluent in another language, which will help if you join an international company or you may have great mathematical or computer ability, which could help you land a more technical role. The key is to focus on your strengths in your application form and focus your search in a particular industry.Social media is a good way to show your credentials to companies and you may get information about potential interviews. However, going to recruitment fairs will help you to meet employers face to face and see if the working culture is right for you. Indeed, making contacts at companies is definitely a step in the right direction, since employees can offer you specific advice, which will help you to shine during interviews. Initial contacts at careers fairs can lead to various opportunities such as attending insight days at companies and from there you may be able to secure some good work experience. Overall, the key is to remain motivated and confident during your search for graduate jobs and make sure you can show employers what your key skills are, by maximising the impact of the information in your application form.
