What type of things will I be working on?
This 12-month industrial placement, starting September 2024, understanding of engineering materials such as metals, ceramics and polymers and how they are utilised in industrial settings. You will build a strong foundation in material analysis techniques, materials identification, failure analysis and material selection working in a laboratory environment alongside like-minded scientists, engineers, and technicians on materials related problems and challenges.
This role will challenge and train you to become a highly proficient analytical materials scientist. You will obtain a deep understanding of materials identification, inspection and analysis techniques by hands-on use of analytical equipment. These will include:
- Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM’s)
- Spectrometers (Raman, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Fluorescence XRF), 2D and 3D optical and digital microscopes
- Non-destructive
- Testing techniques such as 2D X-ray and Industrial 3D X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT)
- Destructive mechanical testing methods such as tensile and fatigue
- Developing a full suite of metallographic preparation skills.

Where will I be working?
This role is based out of our main site in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire. As Renishaw sites are based in semi-rural locations, applicants must have their own form of transport or be willing to relocate to the local area.
What do I need and how do I apply?
This placement scheme is suitable for students who are required to undertake a sandwich placement as part of their degree course. We're looking for students who are currently undertaking a relevant degree such as Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Materials Science, Materials Chemistry.
Training and development is excellent so candidates with no experience but a keen interest in engineering will be strongly considered.
