Laura Stormont: International Relations, University of St. Andrews

David Dawson I have always had a future plan and ambition since I was small. I have now just finished my first year of study at the University of St Andrews and the word career is far more daunting than ever before. And yet incredibly exciting at the same time! The school of International Relations at St Andrews is world-renowned and draws in students from all over the globe. Personally, this enables me to meet people from wide ranging countries, societies and cultures. This also makes it an extremely competitive course, but it is well structured with a committed teaching staff and a huge span of areas and interests of study. Whether it is the theorists of international relations, or the violent conflicts of recent years we are studying, every student seems to share an avid interest and passion for the subject. Whats more, they all appear to have a career in mind. I am no exception. I am looking at careers within an international organisation such as the United Nations or the diplomatic service. I am well aware of how popular and competitive international careers are becoming in today's 'global village'. Yet I am not easily deterred and relish all the opportunities and experiences I feel will help lead to my future goals. I actually view myself as being fortunate for having ambition and knowing what I would like to strive towards. Already, I have been able to calculate which kind of work-experience and contacts would be beneficial for my CV. I am drawn towards a career which involves providing aid to those in other countries, to help those less fortunate and gain the opportunity to travel and broaden my horizons. I have certainly caught the travel bug and have been lucky enough to travel far for a person of my age. As for work experience, I have spent this summer working at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh in an attempt to meet and communicate with a diversity of tourists from all over the world. I am aiming to spend my third year of study at an overseas university. I hope that if I prove that I am willing and enthusiastic to try new challenges and cope with new situations then this will further develop and strengthen my character and that I shall gain invaluable experiences along the way.
