A University of Sheffield graduate has had her work recognised after scooping one of the top law student awards in the country.

Leading international law firm DLA Piper awarded Catherine Earnshaw, 23, with the DLA Award.

The prestigious prize is for the student who gains the highest combined mark in the Business and Commercial Law sections of The College of Law in Birmingham's Legal Practice Course. All students intending to become solicitors must pass before they can proceed to the next stage of practice.

Catherine, who was a student at the College until July, scored 91% in the Commercial Law exam and was awarded 83% in the Business Law exam.

She started her two-year training contract to qualify as a solicitor with international law firm Ince & Co in September after graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2007 with a First Class LLB (Hons) Degree in Law.

Catherine said: "I was both surprised and delighted to find out I had won this award. I worked extremely hard for my LPC exams and am pleased that all the work paid off."
