Recruiting passionate, committed volunteers looking for hands-on Psychology work experience in Sri Lanka and Bali, Indonesia.
SLV is a graduate-led, volunteer organisation working in Sri Lanka and in Bali, Indonesia. We provide Psychology students & graduates with the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience in the mental health sector.
Our Mental Health Placement is for proactive students and graduates who are not only looking for hands-on experience in the mental health sector, but are after an immersive cross-cultural experience as well.
Our aim is to bolster the resources in pre-existing social care initiatives by running therapeutic sessions for individuals living with a wide range of mental health issues and disabilities as well as increase the levels of social interaction and stimulation that individuals receive.
Projects include:
- Working in a variety of clinical and communal setting with people with mental illness
- English teaching 16-25 year olds
- English teaching to children
- Working with individuals with special needs
Those on a Mental Health Placement will be working in a Psychiatric facility in addition to their other projects.
Desirable skills experience:
- Previous experience working with vulnerable individuals (e.g. special
needs, the elderly)
- A keen background knowledge of Psychology and mental health
- Creativity
- Able to work effectively in a team
All volunteers are required to undergo a series of in-country training sessions run by local NGO's, mental health professionals and the SLV Team, such as basic teaching English, working with children and people with special needs. Psychology students and graduates will benefit most from this placement as it comprises of teaching, working with children and those with special needs and also spending time in a clinical environment. Volunteers also attend Psychology focused workshops which help to illustrate the role of Psychology in Indonesian and Sri Lankan culture. You are required to work full time during the week, but you have all weekends off to travel the beautiful country of Sri Lanka.
Volunteers live in home stays with a local family and other volunteers where breakfast and dinner will be provided.
