National Citizen Service (NCS)
The National Citizen Service is a youth programme for 16 and 17 year olds, launched nationwide in 2013. Participants experience residential activities away from home and team-based skill building sessions, before developing their own Social Action Project (SAP) designed to benefit their local communities. NCS aims to create a more cohesive, engaged and responsible society.
Job Description
Participants, in teams of 15, spend one week – away from home at a residential centre – engaging in outward bound, physical activities; they then spend one week in residence locally, developing their key skills. In the third and fourth weeks, young people, design, research and implement a Social Action Project – something done to positively impact their local communities. The programme culminates with a graduation ceremony where numerous groups showcase their achievements.
Each team of young people is accompanied throughout the programme by two NCS Leaders who oversee their journey.

NCS is powered by Learn by Design in the following areas: Luton, North Hertfordshire, Welwyn Hatfield, St Albans, East Herts, Cambridge, Peterborough & Huntingdon.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspiring the team of young people
- Being respected by, and earning the trust of, the young people
- Providing a level of pastoral care for the teams during the four week programme, particularly the two residential weeks.
- Working with other staff members and local groups as young people develop their Social Action Projects.
- Reporting to, and be supported by, the Site Leader, particularly regarding any challenging behaviour.
DatesThe summer programme runs across four weeks. The residential stays are Monday-Friday and the local, project weeks, are Monday-Thursday. (We also deliver a smaller-scale pilot model that runs across three weeks: Monday-Friday, Monday-Friday, Monday-Thursday.)
Staff training events will take place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May in Hertfordshire and Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June in Huntingdon. All staff must attend both days of one weekend.
Programmes start on the following dates:
- 13th July – 6th August
- 20th July – 13th August
- 3rd August – 27th August
- 10th August – 27th August (3 weeks)
Summary
- 10 days (5 x 2) working on the residential phases (food & accommodation provided).
- 8 days (4 x 2, or 4 x 1 – if pilot) based in a local town.
- Staff can work on the first programme and the fourth
Remuneration
- Programme remuneration £1140 - £1430 for 18 days (£900-£1150 for 14 days)
