We are recognised as one of the world's most accurate forecasters, using more than 10 million weather observations a day, an advanced atmospheric model and a high performance supercomputer to create 3,000 tailored forecasts and briefings a day. These are delivered to a huge range of customers from the Government, to businesses, the general public, armed forces, and other organisations.
Forecasting is at the heart of our operations to deliver weather services to a wide variety of customers.
Employment opportunities are available for suitably qualified and experienced forecasters on a fixed term contract of 3 to 6 months duration.
Recruits could be called upon to work in one of a number of roles either in Civil Forecasting at Exeter and Aberdeen or at any one of our defence units in the UK. Selection for roles will depend upon the background and experience of the recruit but will be one of:
Military Station Met Unit Forecaster ? Responsible for flight safety and local station forecast services usually working on a morningevening shift pattern.
Operations Centre at Met Office HQ in Exeter or in Aberdeen ? Civil aviation, public service and commercial forecasting services working mostly on a 7x24 roster.
Candidates may express a preference on where in the UK they are prepared to work.
Job Purpose
Prepare and deliver operational forecast services to customers.
Job Responsibilities
Prepare and deliver a range of added value weather forecast products and services to meet customer requirements.
Identify weather events which have significant input on customers? decision making process and issue associated warnings and services to ensure customers are aware of the potential impact on their activities.
Support and advise team leaders and line managers in monitoring performance and delivering training and development in order that appropriate levels of skills and knowledge remain within the team.
Contribute to the implementation and enhancement of work procedures and processes to help achieve continual improvement in service delivery to customers.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
1. Trained and qualified forecaster to the level of the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists as specified by WMO, Met Office Initial Forecasting Course or the equivalent.
2. Previous experience of delivering weather forecasting services in an operational environment.
3. Evidence of working effectively as a member of a successful team.
4. Excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
5. An in depth understanding of what constitutes effective customer service.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
1. Completed NVQ level 4 in Meteorological Forecasting
2. Trained in and had recent experience of completing meteorological observations.
