Accelerate Programme
We are working to end inequality in education by building a community of exceptional leaders who create change within classrooms, schools and across society. Inspirational teaching and leadership is the key to helping every child succeed, regardless of their background.
At the heart of all the work we do is a commitment to diversifying our workforce within the teaching sector, and outside of it. Currently, black males only account for 0.6% of secondary school headteachers (Department for Education). This isn't good enough. We want pupils at school to have role models that reflect our society - talented individuals who bring fresh perspectives into the classroom and other career sectors.
Our Accelerate Programme is a diversity initiative aimed at increasing the number of black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers and leaders. On the programme, exceptional undergraduates and graduates will have the opportunity to gain core leadership skills, learn more about our Leadership Development Programme and access coaching and mentoring.
What you'll be doing on our Accelerate Programme
Accelerate provides opportunities for skills development, both personal and professional. We aim to help you learn more about yourself and develop your employability and leadership potential. By the end of Accelerate you will have gained the skills and competencies necessary to apply for our two-year Leadership Development Programme in 2019.
On our two-year programme, we'll support you to become a qualified teacher through a fully-funded Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Leadership. By training on the job, you'll have an immediate impact on the lives of the young people who need you the most.
And, whether you choose to remain in the classroom or pursue another career after the programme, you'll benefit from Teach First's influential network of organisations and businesses who share our commitment to ending educational inequality and value the skills and experience our participants gain.
Accelerate Programme events
Accelerate has three different touchpoints during which you'll be engaged in activities to help you develop professionally and gain more knowledge of what it's really like in a classroom. Sessions will take place at our London office in North Greenwich and the school placements at one of our partner schools in north London.
Day one - An inspiring start
This event takes place on 24 January 2019, 6:00 - 8:00pm
We'll kickstart the first event with an introduction to the programme, and time to meet other Accelerate participants. You'll then hear from inspirational speakers and take part in structured networking. Later on there will be an opportunity to attend a debatepanel discussion, and develop your knowledge of our Leadership Development Programme by speaking with the Teach First recruitment team.
Day two - Experience life as a teacher
The second event will take place between 30 January and 15 February 2019
You'll experience school life by shadowing a teacher for a day at one of our partner schools and meet key staff members. There's even the opportunity to take part in focused teaching with a small group or teach a part of a lesson yourself.
Day three - Coaching and training opportunities
This event takes place on 5 March 2019
The third Accelerate event is a development day where you'll reflect on your school experience, receive 1:1 coaching and contribute to a participant led group project. We'll also provide advice and guidance on our selection process for our Leadership Development Programme.
Your Leadership Development Programme assessment
Accelerate culminates with you taking part in an assessment for our Leadership Development Programme. This will take place at our development centre in North Greenwich, London. Find out what this assessment entails.
