"My first graduate job?..well it was not how I dreamed of. When I graduated I was lucky to even get a job with the recession and all. I got a job working in central reservations in a hotel. The money was not excellent but a job is a job at the end of the day. I worked long hours to show my hard work and dedication. Once I worked from 7am-11pm to get more money. I showed my potential, gave ideas how to improve the company and help team members with complaints and enquires becoming one of the top sales agents. My luck finally paid off when I was head hunted within the company to become an Account manager.
Ok it's not in advertising and marketing but you can work up the career ladder, being an Account manager I get to handle major accounts and give ideas on how to improve the hotels, that's where my advertising and marketing degree came in, most of my ideas the director approved. I was approached by head of marketing as was told when a vacancy becomes available I will be snapped up due to my recommendation from central reservations and being an account manager with all the creative ideas I have put together to make the company more successful.
So my advice is don't give up, you can work your way up. Show your potential and don't be like other graduates jumping onto the ban wagon for a job and staying there. Apply before you graduate by getting some experience by doing a sandwich course. Good Luck."
