The prospect of starting university is both exciting and daunting for new students. Suddenly you're in a new city, with a lot more freedom and a budget to stick to. However, being a student doesn't mean you have to make your own entertainment and live on toast for the next three years or so.

Make a weekly budget and stick to it. At the start of each week withdraw the amount of money you have budgeted and lock your debit card away. Avoid using your debit card to pay for things, if you use cash it's much easier to keep control of it.

Your freezer is your best friend at uni! Make things in bulk like soup, curry and stew and freeze it, then you can defrost it when your desperate for food, and have ran out of fresh things to eat!

Don't take too much cash out with you on a night out - I find if you've only got £10 on you, you'll only spend that amount!
