Student Accommodation

For many going to university it will be first their time staying away from home for an extended period of time and living in a completely new area.

The majority of first year students will be given priority to stay in university owned accommodation (halls of residence). In fact a large number of universities guarantee you a place. You should check with the university about this - it will normally tell you in their prospectus or on their website. Other first years will go straight into private rented accommodation - but this usually happens in the second and/or third year. This usually involves a group of student renting a property together and sharing costs between them.

According to recent data collected by the NUS the average weekly rent for all categories of university owned accommodation is around £60 although in London it is significantly higher at just over £70. The rent is likely to include heating and lighting. Also be aware that most universities will ask for a deposit at the start of the year.

The average weekly rent within the private sector can be cheaper, but again in London costs are higher. It is unlikely that the cost of heating and lighting will be included in the rent and again you will have to pay a deposit (usually the equivalent to one month's rent).

Please remember to find out as much as possible and if you can, visit your accommodation before agreeing to anything. If you make an appointment to view a property, never go alone. If you are asked to leave a deposit make sure you get a receipt. Many universities have details of registered accommodation that they recommend, so check these out before looking elsewhere, the Students' Union should be able to point you in the right direction.
