Retailing is the UK's largest employer outside the public sector. 11% of all workers (2.7 million people) are in retailing and the sector has an annual turnover of £260 billion. The sector will see the creation of 270,000 new jobs in the years leading up to 2012, with over 30% of these at managerial/professional level.
Retailing is a good base for anyone starting out in their career. Ultimately the skills learned in this industry will apply to elements to all jobs in later life. People are either trying to sell products into retail or they are providing services to make the industry happen. Lawyers, accountants, architects, planners, caterers, human resources and so many other sectors contribute strongly to the success of retailing at many levels.
