Most people choose to study modern language because of their interest and ability in the subject, while few go into directly-related careers such as translating, interpreting, publishing or teaching. Many go into jobs in which language skills are desirable, such as the media, hospitality, finance or journalism.
There is a wide variety of career opportunities available to those who complete a postgraduate qualification in Linguistics. Skills acquired in linguistics are increasingly valued by a range of employers. Not only linguistic skills and cultural awareness are valued, but also the confidence to communicate orally and on paper, to work effectively in a group, to organise, plan and execute projects and think critically. Linguists can find themselves in tourism, marketing, management, civil service, advertising and teaching.
