The simple answer to this question is that there are more people who want to work or indeed are happy to volunteer in the media industry that there is work to do. This is a great opportunity to flatter your interviewer by saying how great the industry they work in is. When you describe the media industry you will need to speak with passion. Try to avoid being idealistic, recognise that there are negatives to working in the media, but emphasise your passion and dedication.
A good answer will involve you getting creative here. Emailing an agent or leaving an answer phone message may not be enough. You will need to show the interviewer how you would communicate an incentive to the important source, and make it as easy as possible for them to agree. Perhaps you wouldn't mind dropping the name of a project they are working on into the media you create based on the interview.
This is an opportunity for you to communicate a bit of your personality to the interviewer. Your choice will reflect back on you. Try and chose something that is up and coming as this will show that you are up to date, it would also be a good idea to choose something that is related to the job that you are applying for as this will create an interesting talking point. Make sure you justify your choice with reasons which are relevant to the interviewer.
