Give me an example, about a time when you had an underperforming employee reporting to you. How did you address the situation? Did the employee's performance improve?

If you are a recent graduate and have had little experience then you may not immediately have a good example here and the interviewer will not expect you to. If this is true then you should just make up an example and say what you would do. Most examples will involve a lack of motivation. Maybe include some management theorists such as Herzberg, Maslow, Mayo or Machiavelli, as this will demonstrate your academic knowledge and interest in this area.

If I were to interview the people who have reported to you in the past, how would they describe your management style?


Try not to label your style as the interviewer will pigeon hole you and any management style has its limitations. Instead, try and describe your management style and then use examples. Demonstrate that you have a range of styles  and are adaptable as this will make you sound like you have the full package.

Describe the work environment or culture and its management style in which you have experienced the most success.

This question will seek to find more out about your personality, your experience and your management style. It would be prudent to describe a management situation that is challenging and pressurized. Many graduate candidates will not have managerial experience in a working environment and if so you will have to import an example from a different context making sure you highlight your success.
