A brief insight into the ICI R&D job function

R&D is the creative technical hub of our business, harnessing scientific advance and applying it to changing commercial demand for new smells, tastes, textures and finishes. It is our excellence in bioscience, chemistry, polymer and materials science that enables us to stay ahead of the competition.

Type of work
Our scientists work in close collaboration with our businesses and customers to understand shifts in the market and changes in attitudes regarding a wide range of products. At the same time they keep one eye on tomorrow, seeking to anticipate and capitalise on future developments.

ICI spends approximately £150 million each year on R&D. A Technology board, including the senior business research and development managers and led by the Senior Vice President for R&D, is responsible for the development of the Group's Technology Strategy and its implementation by ICI's businesses. The Business Development Board connects technology across ICI to ensure we commercialise it successfully. ICI has recently established a Science Advisory Board (SAB) - similar in many ways to a corporate board of directors - and appointed three leading scientists to work with ICI's senior research executive.

Each ICI business is responsible for its own R&D resources and for driving innovation to meet the needs of its customers and markets. The business R&D teams are complemented by a central resource that aims to provide world class capabilities that are common to all the businesses.

Within each business there are excellent opportunities for you to work in a management or purely technical capacity across a wide range of product areas. Working in partnership with scientists internationally, you will be solving real problems and making a real contribution to our success and that of our customers.

Training and development
In addition to your own particular business area, you may have the chance to interact with the wider research community of ICI, sharing experiences and building your knowledge. Coupled with opportunities for training, this will provide a context for you to drive and develop your career.

What we're looking for
The intellectual and practical challenges of this discipline make it one of the most demanding environments at ICI. As such the majority of our R&D graduate positions require you to have a chemistry or polymer science degree as well as a relevant PhD.
