What did you think about the GrantRail recruitment and induction process? |
The recruitment process was, in my opinion, more efficient to other roles I have applied for. The assessment process was in one day and consisted of verbal and numerical reasoning tests and an interview, and communication was very prompt.
The Graduate Development Scheme includes a week long induction. So my first week was spent with the other new graduates, where we had the opportunity to meet and talk with all the directors, who also all presented to us on the various businesses of GrantRail. |
Briefly describe your role within the company. |
I am on GrantRail’s Graduate Development Scheme, a two year training scheme to introduce graduates into GrantRail and the rail industry. The Scheme allows me to gain an appreciation of all areas within GrantRail.
Currently I am working 4 weekly placements around Head Office based in Doncaster; so far, in the short time I have been here, I had had the opportunity to work within HR, Marketing and Business Development and the Control Centre. I think it is really important to have an understanding of how all departments within a business work regardless of your discipline.
My next placements after Head Office will consist of six monthly engineering placements within Projects and Specialist Businesses.

What is your background (e.g. education, Qualifications, previous rail experience)? |
| In 2005, I graduated in BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from Manchester Metropolitan University and in 2007 I graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Engineering Materials Failure and Analysis from the University of Nottingham. |
What attracted you to GrantRail and what do you now enjoy about working at GrantRail?
|
From doing my degree I decided I wanted to work within the rail industry, I worked in a Maintenance Depot for a Train Operating Company for my industrial placement and I also then did my major project in the final year on the analysis of train wheel profiles.
I also wanted to look for a company who offered a good graduate training scheme and a company who would support me in gaining professional qualifications, which is why I was attracted to GrantRail.
The short time I have had so far working for GrantRail, I have really enjoyed. I know that the training scheme is going to help me and there is always help and guidance if you want it. All the people I have met are really friendly and helpful, which I have also experienced out of work I join in with the 5-a-side football. |
What would you say to someone thinking about a career with GrantRail?
|
Definitely consider applying if you want to work with a company with a good graduate scheme and that will help you with your personal development.
