My client is a boutique executive headhunting company specialising in the areas of investment banking, asset management and alternative investments.
The company currently has a headcount of 10 which is 6 in Brighton and 4 in London. They have just recently appointed a new Chairman, who is an ex-CEO of Lloyds and are really excited about the contacts he can bring, market knowledge and operational expertise.
They work typically on vacancies paying £80-120k for the successful candidates but also have the ability to work on significantly higher-level positions where they will work on ?retained? assignments on an exclusive basis.
If you think that you have to sacrifice a high flyer career to live in Brighton then a career in headhunting bucks the trend.
Career
Hidden away out of the eyes of Graduates are a number of exceptionally successful headhunting firms that have offices in Brighton but work and recruit into London financial markets. This is the perfect way to combine some time spent in London meeting with clients and candidates with after work beers on the seafront. Headhunters in these firms have not made any financial sacrifices by working in Brighton but instead have the best of both worlds ? money and lifestyle.
Earnings
Graduates will typically get a starting salary of £20k and earn a percentage of the placements they make. You will start out working under a senior consultant as a researcher and headhunt candidates for their roles. Typically researchers will place 2-3 candidates a month and earn commission of between £500 - £1500 per placement. Most researchers will progress to be a consultant in a year and then earn a larger share of the fees. 70% of consultants in this firm earn over £100k within three years.
Working life
A headhunter is successful because they are NOT a sales person. At the level a headunter works you have to prove yourself to clients by being knowledgable, hard working and honest ? ensuring they trust you to manage their job search or find them the ideal candidate. The most successful headhunters have exceptional reputations and take the time to build and develop them over many years. Fundamental to this is a passion for the financial markets and a desire to be the best of the best.
Skills
A career in headhunting will teach you a multitude of skills including:
- Pitching and presenting to clients
- Relationship Building
- Account Management
- Negotiation
- Long term business strategy
This really is a rare opportunity and will be an incredible career opportunity for the right person.
