Finance underpins everything we do - so it's vital that we find and nurture our future finance leaders now. That's why we created the Finance Leader Development Programme (FLDP).
The FLDP is our five-year graduate entry scheme, designed specifically for high-calibre individuals with the potential and determination to make a real difference in senior finance roles and to become BAE Systems' finance leaders of tomorrow.
As a graduate on the FLDP, you can expect a role that offers significant responsibility and exposure from the outset. In the first three years, you'll complete three 12-month placements at a range of geographical locations across the UK, gaining extensive experience of financial accounting, management accounting and project accounting whilst also completing your CIMA qualification. This will take great commitment from you, but we'll offer you unrivalled support. BAE Systems is a CIMA Premier Partner, our CIMA training is delivered through BPP, a leading training provider, and we offer a comprehensive study package.
After successfully completing the first three years of the scheme and achieving the CIMA qualification, the FLDP continues with a two-year senior accountancy position, offering managerial experience, thus helping you to develop the skills you will require to move into a leadership role within our dynamic finance arena at the end of the five-year programme.
During your placements you'll gain experience in:
Financial Accounting
Usually based in central finance, this role will entail working quickly and accurately under the pressure of tight deadlines. At the end, you can expect a solid foundation in core accounting.
Management Accounting
You'll be involved in a wide range of activities from the development of strategy and long-term business planning to assess operational efficiency and inventory management.
Project Accounting
You'll provide financial support to the decision-making process. Ensuring robust contract status reporting by working closely with the project delivery team will also be key, as will understanding the systems being used and constructively challenging completion estimates.
As you progress, you'll soon understand why the FLDP is championed so enthusiastically by finance members and Board Directors alike.
Learning and Development
We will encourage and support you to reach your full potential. You'll receive world-class training and support. The FLDP is our key to developing future finance leaders for BAE Systems. The programme will give you the tools to succeed; you will undertake regular performance and development appraisals and receive a senior mentor to provide you with support and guidance along the way.
In order to maximise the development of talent, we use the 70-20-10 Development Model: the most effective way to plan development is to focus 70% on experience; 20% on exposure; and 10% on education.
We provide regular FLDP workshops, an annual conference, superb e-learning facilities and stretch assignment opportunities. You will have access to our Knowledge, Skills and Competency Gap Analysis tool and you'll receive a development 360 feedback report on an annual basis.
Once you're into your fourth and fifth years of the programme and are CIMA qualified, you will receive an allocation of 20 days for training and development, some of which will be used to attend our well established People Management Toolkit course and Professional Development Centre, with the remaining days being tailored to you as an individual.
After five years on the FLDP, you will be a highly skilled member of our finance community. That's a huge benefit in itself. But, as you go along, you'll find out just how dedicated the company is to making sure you have every possible support and opportunity to learn more.

Apply now
To join us on the FLDP you must have a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor's degree in any subject and 280 UCAS points or equivalent (excluding General Studies).
Although the academic requirements are important, you'll also require equally strong personal qualities, such as the ability to be resilient, flexible, analytical yet practical and focused on taking responsibility for your own progression. Finance is a very hands-on profession that will see you working in demanding industrial environments, therefore it's vital that you have the tact, confidence and tenacity to challenge accepted practices and manage cost savings.
You must also be flexible and willing to move to new locations annually to maximise your development while on the five-year programme.
We ask all candidates to complete the same online application to ensure our selection process is fair and consistent. Your application will then go through a variety of selection and assessment methods and, if you're successful, will conclude at an assessment centre.
As a company committed to developing talent, we welcome applications from a diverse range of people, from all backgrounds and with many different skills, experience and perspectives.
We particularly welcome applications from women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, and will make reasonable adjustments to our application and selection process for people with disabilities.
