"Having spent a year out after finishing university in 2009 with a degree in Mechatronic engineering, I was looking for a career in Engineering. I applied to a number of roles and accepted a job with an engineering firm in Surrey. The company I work for is a defence company that has high profile contracts with the MOD amongst others, and the sector I work in is the part of the company that creates integrated systems such as Radar's, Unmanned Air Vehicles and communication networks.
I chose this company as they offer an excellent graduate scheme, providing multiple placements within the business across all projects and a range of stretch assignments that provide extra experience and transferable skills, such as creating and delivering presentations. My first placement which has lasted a year was working as a Graduate Systems Engineer on the Combat Management Systems (CMS) for new Aircraft Carriers. This role gave me immediate responsibility providing deliverables to the systems team. This involved my own mini system integration project. I was also offered the ability to work on a range of tasks which gave me a taste of different aspects of Systems Engineering, project specific tasks and the processes at this firm. For one of my stretch assignments I was asked to go into local schools to raise awareness of possible careers in engineering. This has been incredibly rewarding and a great accompaniment to my day job. The work here has been challenging and interesting with great opportunities to advance your career and try different aspects of engineering."
